The Hands Behind Mathèa: Artisan Partnerships, Natural Materials & Our Commitment to a Better World

By Karla Díaz

When I started Mathèa, I wasn't just looking to create beautiful objects for the home. I was searching for something more meaningful — a way to bring the warmth of human hands, the honesty of natural materials, and the wisdom of generations-old craft traditions into everyday life.

That search led me to the forests, workshops, and kitchen tables of some of the most talented independent artisans in California and Mexico. And it changed everything.

Wood That Tells a Story

There is something quietly profound about working with wood. Every grain is a record of time — of seasons, of rain, of sunlight filtered through a canopy. When we source our materials, we're not just looking for beautiful pieces of timber. We're looking for wood with a story worth continuing.

Our artisan woodworking partners in California share this philosophy. They work with sustainably harvested and reclaimed wood, shaping it slowly and intentionally — no shortcuts, no mass production. The result is handcrafted home decor that carries the fingerprints of the person who made it, quite literally.

I've sat in these workshops. I've watched hands move over wood with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from years of practice. That's the energy that comes home with every Mathèa piece.

Barro Rojo: A Living Tradition from Oaxaca

One of the most humbling parts of building Mathèa has been our partnership with ceramic artisans who work in the barro rojo tradition — a centuries-old craft rooted in the red clay of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Barro rojo is not just a technique. It is a lineage. Families have passed down the knowledge of how to read the clay, how to shape it by hand, how to fire it in ways that bring out its deep, earthy warmth. When you hold a barro rojo piece, you are holding something that connects you to that unbroken thread of human creativity.

We are deeply honored to work alongside these artisans — not as vendors, but as true partners. We believe that supporting their craft is one of the most direct ways we can invest in cultural preservation and in the livelihoods of independent makers.

Sourcing with Intention: Our Natural Materials Philosophy

Every material we choose goes through a simple but non-negotiable filter: Is this good for the people who made it, the people who use it, and the planet that provided it?

That means we prioritize natural materials — wood, clay, plant-based fibers — over synthetics. It means we ask hard questions about where things come from and how they were harvested. And it means we're willing to work with smaller quantities and longer timelines to get it right.

We're also committed to eco-conscious packaging — minimal, plastic-free, and wherever possible, compostable or reusable. Because a beautiful object shouldn't arrive wrapped in something that will outlive it by centuries.

Why It All Matters

I think about the homes these pieces will live in. The morning coffee poured into a barro rojo mug. The wooden bowl that becomes the center of a family dinner. The small, beautiful object on a shelf that someone reaches for every day without quite knowing why it makes them feel good.

It makes them feel good because it was made with care. By someone who knew what they were doing, who loved what they were doing, and who put that love into the work.

That's what Mathèa is. That's what we're building — one handcrafted piece at a time.
