Handcrafted Black Walnut Hollow Vessel
Made with intention, shaped by hand.
This striking hollow vessel was turned by a skilled wood artist who works almost exclusively with salvaged and sustainably sourced hardwoods. Each of their pieces begins with a careful selection of raw wood, chosen not just for beauty, but for character — and this one is a perfect example.
The Black Walnut used here features a stunning transition from dark heartwood to pale sapwood, gracefully sweeping across one side of the vessel. That natural contrast became the heart of the design, guiding the shape and finish of the final piece.
Turned and hollowed entirely by hand, the vessel has approximately 1/4" thick walls and a subtly weighted base that gives it a grounded, balanced feel. The surface is polished just enough to reveal the depth of the grain, then finished with natural beeswax for a soft, organic sheen — not overly glossy, but warm and touchable.
Though the artist often favors more matte finishes, this particular piece called for something with a bit more presence. It’s meant to be seen, and lived with — on a shelf, a table, or anywhere you’d like a reminder of quiet craftsmanship.
